冷戰期間，美國最初試圖限制蘇聯於世界各地的影響力。為了遏制蘇聯，美國、加拿大和10個西歐國家共同建立了北大西洋公約組織，以聯合盟國對抗任何向北美和歐洲的軍事入侵，後來又有14個歐洲國家陸續加入了這一共同防禦聯盟，包括土耳其和一些前華沙條約成員國以及部分前蘇聯加盟共和國。出於政治上的現實考量，美國也與對抗蘇聯的共產主義國家結盟，例如中蘇分裂後的中華人民共和國。近年來，美國專注於自身的邊界安全，防止非法移民和非法販毒進入國內—尤其是針對墨西哥和加勒比海國家。美國也致力於對抗恐怖主義和避免大規模殺傷性武器的擴散，但其主要目標仍為保護在國內外的國家利益以及公民安全。
軍事
美國軍隊分為四個軍種：陸軍、空軍、海軍和海軍陸戰隊，全都由國防部管理。海岸警衛隊在和平時期由國土安全部管轄，戰爭期間歸海軍部。
美軍雖然在20世紀到今天這100多年來經歷過了一戰、二戰，韓戰，越戰，科索沃戰爭，伊拉克戰爭等大小戰爭，多次參與聯合國維和行動如在海灣戰爭中將入侵科威特的伊拉克軍隊趕出科威特，但美軍因為這些戰爭、維和行動陣亡的士兵人數加起來的總和也不足50萬人，而美國本土幾乎沒幾個美國平民在1900年以來因戰爭原因死亡，可見美軍對內的保護和對外的科技軍事實力。
在蘇聯垮台後，美軍的軍事力量之強大，在全球沒有任何國家能比。美軍的特殊之處在於它能迅速將軍事力量投射至全球。雖然法國和英國也有一定的軍事投射力量，但美軍是唯一一支能在世界上任何一個國家、任何一個角落進行大規模區域戰爭的軍隊。美國也擁有世界上能夠使用的最龐大的核武器庫，並且是世界上唯一曾經在實戰中使用過核武器的國家，二戰末期在日本的廣島市、長崎市投下兩枚原子彈。
美軍的軍事潛力也表現在物流管理上，在這方面的龐大優勢使美軍能夠迅速集結部隊應付戰爭。美國空軍有C-5、C-17等巨型空運載具，並且裝備世界最先進的F-22猛禽戰斗機。美國海軍有12艘現役大型航空母艦，配合軍事力量投射的原則，使美軍能對任何可能的威脅作出迅速反應。美國在1949年4月4日加入地區性軍事防衛組織北大西洋公約組織，也使美國本土有了一層除美軍外的軍事保護屏障。
美國軍隊目前有現役軍人140萬，另有幾十萬預備役部隊和國民警衛隊兵員。美國實行志願兵役制度，在戰時曾實施過義務兵役。美國的軍事開支名列世界第一，2005年的軍費超過緊隨其後的14個國家的總和。然而，美國的軍事預算僅占其GDP的4%。美國在全球有七百多個軍事基地，包括在和美國沒有外交關系的古巴也有軍事基地，遍及除南極洲外的各大洲。
比起冷戰期間，由於政治制度內部的軍事思想變化，美國對軍事上的開支和態度已經改變許多。單純以物質資源衡量，美軍目前的開銷小於20年前的規模。然而，美軍依然被世界視為訓練有素、裝備最為先進的部隊。與潛在的敵手相比，美軍在科技上擁有絕對優勢，這種優勢是經過常年的大量研究投資所累積的。與國防相關的研究促成了許多技術突破，包括太空探險、電腦、網際網路、超文本系統、核能源、全球定位系統、低可偵測性、防彈背心、甚至是微波爐，以及近來致力開發的雷射武器。對美軍而言，這些在科技研究經費通常高於戰斗人員開支。軍事技術與民間經濟保持了緊密的連結，促成了美國的科技和經濟發展，經由技術轉移，其他國家往往也因此受益。
歷史
殖民時期以前(1607以前)
在兩萬多年前, 有一批來自亞洲的流浪者, 經由北美到中南美洲, 這些人就是印第安人的祖先. 當哥倫布發現新大陸時, 居住在美洲的印第安人, 約有2,000萬, 其中有大約100萬人住在現在的加拿大和美國中北部, 其餘絕大部分住在現在的墨西哥和美國南部. 大約1萬年前, 又有另一批亞洲人, 移居到北美北部, 這是後來的愛斯基摩人. 而最早到美洲的白種人大概是維京人, 他們是一群喜好冒險的捕漁人, 有人認為他們在1,000年前,曾到過北美東海岸. 殖民時期(1607～1753) 1607年, 一個約一百人的殖民團體, 在乞沙比克海灘建立了詹姆士鎮, 這是英國在北美所建的第一個永久性殖民地. 在以後150年中, 陸續涌來了許多的殖民者, 定居於沿岸地區, 其中大部分來自英國, 也有一部分來自法國、德國、荷蘭、愛爾蘭和其他國家. 18世紀中葉, 13個英國殖民地逐漸形成, 他們在英國的最高主權下有各自的政府和議會. 這13個殖民區因氣候和地理環境的差異, 造成了各地經濟形態、政治制度與觀念上的差別.
獨立運動(1754～1783)
18世紀中葉, 英國在美洲的殖民地與英國之間, 已有了裂痕. 殖民地的擴張, 使他們產生某種自覺, 自覺到英國的迫害, 而萌生獨立的念頭. 1774年, 來自12州的代表, 聚集在費城, 召開所謂第一次大陸會議, 希望能尋出一條合理的途徑, 與英國和平解決問題, 然而英王卻堅持殖民地必須無條件臣服於英王, 並接受處分. 1775年, 在麻州點燃戰火, 5月, 召開第二次大陸會議, 堅定了戰爭與獨立的決心, 並發表有名的獨立宣言, 提出充分的理由來打這場仗, 這也是最後致勝的要素. 1781年, 美軍贏得了決定性的勝利, 1783年, 美英簽定巴黎條約, 結束了獨立戰爭.
組成新政府(1784～1819)
革命的成功, 使美國人民有了以立法形式表達他們政治觀念的機會. 1787年, 在費城舉行聯邦會議, 會中華盛頓被推為主席, 他們採取一項原則, 即中央的權力是一般性的, 但必須有審慎的規定和說明, 同時, 他們也接受一項事實, 那就是全國性政府必須有稅收、鑄造貨幣、調整商業、宣戰及締結條約的權力. 此外, 為了防止中央權力過大, 而採取孟德斯鳩的均權政治學說, 即政府中設置三個平等合作與制衡的部門, 即立法、行 政、司法三種權力相互調和, 制衡而不使任何一權占控制地位.
向西擴張(1820～1849)
19世紀初期, 數以千計的人, 越過阿帕拉契山, 向西移動, 有些開拓者, 移居到美國的邊界, 甚至深入屬於墨西哥的領地、以及介於阿拉斯加與加利福尼亞的俄勒岡. 開拓者勇敢、勤奮地向西尋求更好的生活.
南北沖突(1850～1869)
引起內戰的原因, 不單是經濟上、政治上、軍事上的問題, 還包括了思想上的沖突. 內戰暴露了美國的弱點. 對這個國家的存在, 作了一番考驗. 經過了這次考驗, 美國才步向一個中央集權化之現代國家的坦途. 南北之間, 為奴隸問題而起爭執, 南方在全國政治上的主要方針, 就在保護和擴大"棉花與奴隸"制度所代表的利益；而北部各州, 主要是製造業、商業和 金融的中心, 這些生產無需依賴奴隸, 這種經濟上和政治上的沖突都是由來已久的. 1860年代初期, 11個南方的州脫離聯邦, 另組政府, 北方則表示, 為了統一將不惜付出任何代價. 1861年, 內戰爆發了, 這場美國人面對面的流血戰, 打了四年, 南方遭到嚴重的破壞, 而且留下深深的傷痕. 1865年, 北方戰勝了, 這項勝利不但顯示美國恢復統一, 而且, 從此全國各地不再施行奴隸制度.
工業化與改革(1870～1929)

第二次世界大戰(1930～1959)
經濟大恐慌, 影響的不只是美國, 世界各國都受到它的打擊, 經濟大恐慌, 使上百萬的工人失業, 大批的農人被迫放棄耕地, 工廠商店關門, 銀行倒閉，一片蕭條. 1932年, 羅斯福當選總統, 他主張政府應拿出行動來結束經濟大恐慌, 新政府雖然解決了許多的困難, 但美國的經濟還是要到二次大戰, 才蘇醒起來. 第二次世界大戰之後, 美蘇兩國, 關系日趨惡化, 分別在軍事、政治、經濟、宣傳各方面, 加緊准備, 一如戰時, 這種狀態, 被稱為"冷戰".
70年代中期, 經濟一度復甦, 但到70年代未期, 又出現通貨膨脹. 1976年, 美國建國200周年, 全國舉行各項慶祝活動. 1981年4月12日, 美國成功地發射"哥倫比亞號"太空梭, 將人類又帶入另一個太空新紀元. 1985年, 里根連任總統, 在日新月異的人類發展史中,美國將展開新的一頁.
經濟
縱觀美國經濟史，是一個從成功的殖民地經濟於20世紀過渡到世界最大的工業國的歷程。
美國的經濟體系兼有資本主義和混合經濟的特徵。在這個體系內，企業和私營機構做主要的微觀經濟決策，政府在國內經濟生活中的角色較為次要；然而，各級政府的總和卻佔GDP的36%；在發達國家中，美國的社會福利網相對較小，政府對商業的管制也低於其他發達國家。
在全國各地區，經濟活動重心不一。例如：紐約市是金融、出版、廣播和廣告等行業的中心；洛杉磯是電影和電視節目製作中心；舊金山灣區和太平洋沿岸西北地區是技術開發中心；中西部是製造業和重工業中心，底特律是著名的汽車城，芝加哥是該地區的金融和商業中心；東南部以醫葯研究、旅遊業和建材業為主要產業，並且由於其薪資成本低於其他地區，因此持續的吸引製造業的投資。

美國最大的貿易夥伴是毗鄰的加拿大（19%），中國（12%）、墨西哥（11%）和日本（8%）緊隨其後，每天大約有價值高達11億美元的產品流經美加的國界。美國經濟被認為是世界上最大也是最重要的經濟體。美國經濟高度發達，全球多個國家的貨幣與美元掛鉤，而美國的證券市場被認為是世界經濟的晴雨表。
雖然美國的人均收入名列世界前茅，但財富相對集中，與西歐相比，40%的人口相對更為貧困，而前20%的人則更富裕。自1975年以來，社會流動程度較低，勞動力市場兩極化，經濟增長的成果流向收入較高的20%的家庭，這種差距是因為相對而言更高的經濟自由所產生的。不過，如同基尼系數顯示的，美國的家庭平均收入仍遠高於絕大多數的工業化國家。而且在聯合國發表的《2006年人類發展報告》當中的美國的人類發展指數中，美國最窮的20%的人的人類發展指數也與自稱「社會主義優越性」的共產主義國家古巴的人類發展指數相同。
自從1980年代隆納·里根的總統任期以來，美國增加了對新自由主義經濟政策的運用，減少政府對經濟的干預、並減少福利制度的規模，拋棄了自經濟大恐慌以來長期實行的、偏向干涉主義的凱恩斯派經濟政策。也因此，美國政府在社會福利方面提供的服務比其他工業化國家都要少，降低國內的稅賦，並更依賴於自由市場和私營的慈善機構上。
科學和科技

交通運輸
由於汽車產業在美國的發展相當早（比較起其他西方國家），美國許多城市的發展都提前顧慮到了將城市和住宅區搭配道路網路的設計。為了連結廣闊的國土，美國設計並建造了高通行量、高速度的高速公路，美國的國家交通系統主要便是依賴這些高速公路網。當中最重要的是州際高速公路系統的建設。這些高速公路在1950年代經由當時的總統德懷特·艾森豪威爾授權建造。根據2004年的數據，美國的公路總長為6,407,637公里，名列世界第一。
美國雖然曾經是英國的殖民地，但自美國從英國獨立後，因美國想與前宗主國英國劃清界線，加上「右上左落」(左駕右駛) 的法國間接支持美國獨立，所以不跟隨英國的「左上右落」(右駕左駛) 的原則，而將道路通行方向定為「右上左落」(左駕右駛)，這個規劃亦影響其他國家，例如加拿大和中國。
大城市裡也有建設公共交通的系統，紐約市的地鐵網路是當中最大的，也是世界上載客量最為沉重的捷運網路之一。而區域鐵路和公共汽車網路則延伸至長島、紐約上州、新澤西州、和康乃狄克州，都成為了世界上載客量最大的交通網之一。但是普遍而言，美國城市的公共交通相對其他發達國家較為薄弱，人們出行更多的使用私人汽車。
美國建造了橫貫大陸的鐵路網路，用以在48個州之間運載貨物。美國鐵路公司（Amtrak）所建造的鐵路網也橫貫了48個州中的46個，專門用於客運用途。美國的鐵路貨運系統是世界最繁忙和先進的，且美國的鐵路總長度位居世界第一。然而美國鐵路的客運並不如西歐和日本那般發達，部分原因是出自美國國土的遼闊；若要到達數千英里以外的大城市，搭乘飛機會比搭乘鐵路還要省時。美國政府的分析便認為空中客運是導致客運鐵路公司在1970年代接連倒閉的主因。
空中運輸是長途旅行的更好選擇。以乘客量而言，在2004年全世界前30個最繁忙的機場中就有17個位於美國，包括了排名第一的亞特蘭大哈茲菲爾德-傑克遜國際機場。以運貨量而言，在同一年裡，全世界前30個最繁忙的貨運機場就有12個在美國，包括了排名第一的孟菲斯國際機場（MEM）。
許多世界上主要的港口也位於美國；最繁忙的是加利福尼亞州的洛杉磯港和長堤港，以及紐約港，它們全都是世界上最繁忙的港口。五大湖也有許多船運交通，每大湖都與密西西比河的河網路廣泛連接，河的最下游直通大西洋。而第一個連接五大湖與大西洋的伊利運河（Erie Canal）則促成了美國中西部的快速農業和工業發展，並使得紐約市成為美國的經濟中心。
地理
美國的國土面積是世界第三大，僅次於俄羅斯和加拿大。美國國土東至大西洋、西至太平洋、南至墨西哥灣、北至加拿大。阿拉斯加州也與加拿大接壤，南至太平洋而北至北冰洋。夏威夷州則處在太平洋的群島上，位於北美大陸的西南方。
美國國土地形變化多端，尤其是在西部。東海岸沿岸地區有著海岸平原，在南部較為寬廣，而在北部較為狹窄，海岸平原在新澤西州以北並不存在，不過在長島等地也有一些冰川沉積平原。

F . Scott Fitzgerald, born on September 24,1896, an American novelist, was once a student of St.Paul Academy, the Newman School and attended Princeton. University for a short while. A week ago , 「Sports for Life」 pregramme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their child to play. Since then , our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it . Here is a memo (備忘錄) for your reference when you answer the phones.
Sports 1:Basketball.
We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports.Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible . Students will take a prevate bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park .To cover the cost of hiring a bus ,each student will have to pay$10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game .
Sports 2:Gym
We will be using St.Peter』s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing theis park . Frist , it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second , it has lot of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst.Three activities, skipping , jogging , outdoor aerobics (有氧運動),all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. In the United Statcs, there were some well-constructed houses for native Indians, ranging from the simple brush shelter to the five-storied pueblo.
In the eastem United States, one of the existing types was that commonly know under the Algonkian name of wigwam in which the Iroquois Indians lived.
