Trillian Status Indicators from GoTrillian.com!

Well I guess we've made you wait long enough. Many of you may have noticed some us using special images in our signatures to display our current status on various mediums and thought "How'd they do that?!" Well now is your chance to get your very own status images to show everyone your status and your love of Trillian! Here's how it works:

Register at GoTrillian.com if you're not a member already
Download the webstatus plugin (http://www.sjoerdjob.com/plugins/webstatus/)
Install the plugin and configure using the following information: Label: Anything you want, ie. GoTrillian
User ID: Note that this is a number. If you don't know yours, search for your username (http://www.gotrillian.com/forums/memberlist.php?do=search) and look at the link to your profile. The number after "u=" is your user ID.
Your GoTrillian.com password
Protocol: UDP
Server: status.gotrillian.com:8675

Those are the steps to get Trillian reporting your status to GoTrillian.com. The next and final step is to insert images into your signatures, web sites, etc. Here is an example image URL:

The different values in the URL are: Image Set (Available sets are default, smallblue, mediumblue, smallsilver, mediumsilver)
Medium (Available mediums are aim, icq, msn, jabber, rendezvous, irc, sametime, novell, exchange, and jabber)
User ID

Now you might be wondering, what the heck is an image set? Well, GoTrillian's online status indicator allows you to express yourself and your status with different image styles. Currently there are four different ones, small/medium blue and small/medium silver. (Default is smallblue) Just change the name in the URL and you will get a different style!

Also, don't forget about left and right images to complete the online status indicators. The URL is similar for these, here is an example:

These images go at the beginning and end of your images. Also, some sets have multiple images that can be used on the right side. For example, all but mediumsilver have 7 additonal images and mediumsilver has 6. (Example: http://status.gotrillian.com/img/smallsilver-right1.png - http://status.gotrillian.com/img/smallsilver-right7.png) Try them all out to see which one you like the best!

For now this is being treated as a public beta test as there might still be some bugs that need to be worked out. Your input will be appreciated and will help us to make it the best it can be. Later on there will be a page on the site dedicated to this as well as a FAQ which will do a much better job at explaining how all this works than this hasty post. If you have any questions please post them here.

PS. If you'd like you can submit image sets to GoTrillian. If you'd like to follow these guidelines:
Filenames should be in this format: medium-status.ext. Supported image types are gif, jpg, and png. The status relates to the exact status reported by Trillian, ie "Out to Lunch". The filenames must be lowercase entierly and for spaces use underscores, ie "msn-out_to_lunch.png".
Choose a short unique name for your set that doesn't include spaces or special characters, ie. mediumsilver
Put all images in a directory with the ID as the name and zip into a zip archive having the ID as the filename.

Any png, gif, or jpg images can be used with GoTrillian Webstatus. :)

The audience for GoTrillian's webstatus is those who would like status indicators but don't have the technical know-how or resources to set-up their own webstatus script, and it's set up so that many people can use it. As such it only supports one account per medium per user; it's by design. If you want more, then check out MrCPU's scripts.

Well if I were you and I had spent considerable time on a status indicator script, I probably would not change either. GoTrillian's webstatus isn't meant to replace or compete with your scripts. I respect the work put into yours. It is an alternative for those without the means necessary to set up your script on their own. So it fulfills a slightly different need. :)

Currently there is not much that can be done about that. Users could limit the number of indicators or omit the cap images. Separate images are being used by design.

Generally the minimum requirements for a set are images for offline, online, and away. If a user is using your set and sets his or her status to away, the status indicator would show a broken image because no away image exists for that medium in the set. So just keep that in mind.

how small are we talking here? 16x16 of just the clients, dots, or what?

The only thing I can think of that might be a problem is when the status is set to away for AIM (as an example), how would a person know if the status is for AIM without obscuring the AIM medium graphic.

Ok they're up. Be careful not to change the filename and to put it in a folder. It's a minor thing I know; it lets me install them quicker. ;-)

Also there's a reason why you were seeing images from the default set. Because you had no 'away' images, it was defaulting to the away images in the default set.

I updated it to add skype. However, I just noticed that none of the image sets have any skype icons. :p

Since the update code and image code has been modified, it could potentially break existing functionality. If anyone notices any problems, please let me know. :)

First of all, after every update, WS waits five (5) seconds before sending anything, because if the second later, another change occurs, I can safe the server some trouble by bundling them. So you have to wait 5+ seconds.

Also, there's something called "cache".

And finally, there's one more thing: I'm not sending the final update anymore... I might do that once again in a long while, but I need to prepare denny for it too

yeah im havin the same problem, always showing me as offline, its been doing it for about a week. webstatus shows as online, and ive even deleted and recreated the connection. anyone know why this might be?

there is a nasty bug in the plugin, i am not able to delete WS accounts i created for testing purposes a second and a third account and tried to delete them again.

but because the ini file is not cleared the accounts are not cleared and the show back up again after trillian restart :S

The plugin reports data to the server on port 8675 using UDP. If you are behind a firewall you may need to forward that port.

Doh, I just found out what was wrong with mine, after tinkering with it for hours. I had the wrong password!!

I think this should be reported as a bug, because I typed in the wrong PW in the Connection Manager for WebStatus and it didnt throw up an error or anything. In fact, the WebStatus icon lite up like it was active, and even told me it was online when I had my mouse rolled over it.

Ah! You're right. When you have entered a wrong password, it doesn't tell you (I just tested this myself).

Well, it's not a bug. It is that way by design. UDP is a send and forget protocol which means it doesn't receive a response back from the server.

It would seem to be that your WebStatus password is the same as the website. So if you change the password for your GoTrillian.com website, you would need to change your WebStatus password to match.

Hence, if you needed to change your WebStatus password, the only way to do it, is to change your GoTrillian.com website password.

According to my records, you haven't submitted any status information to the server. Are you sure you're using "1522" as your user ID?

I myself have no realistic way of differentiating between Jabber and GTalk... Well, I could do some really process-wasting checks, but I feel it's not my job.

I don't really see the need to add an entirely new medium just for gtalk when we already have a Jabber medium supported. However, if you wanted an image to represent only gtalk then you could perhaps have an image set which has a gtalk image for the jabber images.

A code/setup page will come in the near future. November has quickly become a very busy month for me. It's crazy. I may give it a try over Thanksgiving.

Here's an idea: Is it possible to have the AccuWeather (or maybe the Cabriometer) plugin as a status image displaying the current weather icon?

Of course the more I think about it, it would have to be implemented in the WebStatus plugin (if it isn't already somehow "could" detect it). The other thing is that if I had multiple cities set up in the AccuWeather plugin, how would it determine which city I wanted to display.

But if I had just one city, could this be possible? Any further thoughts or ideas on this?

just use trillianstatus (http://trillstatus.mrcpu.de). only problem is that if you want to use any of these image sets, youll probably have to edit their file names (and ask for permission or something).

Hi all. New member, here, but not a new viewer, and certainly not a new Trillian user. I hate that my first post is of a problem, but I know this is the place to ask it!

The images used to represent status must be hosted at gotrillian.com for it to work correctly. If you create an image set or theme yourself, you may submit it (attach it to a post or post a link), and I can add it to the list.

I read that question differently. Yes, you can use the images almost anywhere - Email (if it supports HTML), your own website, signatures, etc. You would use the GoTrillian.com status image links like you did in your signature in ths forum (except you would probably need to use HTML instead on some instances).

Now, sorry I wasn't more clear earlier. But yes, it crashes. Trillian loads the interface, emoticons, and all plugins fine up to the webstatus one, then it crashes. I viewed the .dmp file with WinDbg and rand the .ecxr command. From what I can tell, it is the webstatus plugin. This is what came up. Not sure what the msvcrt.dll mess is.

Hello folks,

Not sure WHAT I'm doing wrong, but I cannot get this thing to work for the life of me. the plugin shows connected, and I've reset my gotrillian.com password just to make sure I'm using the right one.

I've also made sure that my Windows firewall permitted the proper port, and I even had my firewall admin at work open the port for me. So, I have clear sailing supposedly.

But, no matter what I try, I just get the offline icons.

My number is 1996. Is there any way someone can check to see if I'm actually hitting the server with my info at all?

Any other thoughts folks?

FYI, I can disconnect from WebStatus and connect with ANY password and it allows it...does it normally do that? I've triple-checked that I am now using the correct password, but as a test I tried something else, and it would still show connected... seemed weird to me.

Because of how the WebStatus UDP Protocol works, I only send packages to GTC, yet I recieve none. Denny, remind me to go work on a TCP one soon ;)...

GoTrillian.Com doesn't tell me wether or not the password is correct, so I don't know. I just assume you typed in the correct password.

I can't tell wether the messages arrive. Another UDP Oddity. Denny, do they arrive?

As far as the crashing is concerned, I haven't the faintest.

I checked and there are no submissions from you, GreyHawk. That means one of three things:
Your submissions aren't reaching the server due to a firewall or something else hindering them
The UserID and Password don't match those of your account
Either the server name or port is not specified correctly. It should be status.gotrillian.com:8675

And be careful about the order of 8675... It's Eight, Six, Seven, Five. Not Eight, Seven, Six, Five. It's easy to confuse the 6 and the 7.

Will do! Though, as far as I can remember and see when downloading and opening the archive, they *were/are* following the naming guideline. Right those two things are new. But with multiple people submitting themes, it helps if they all follow a standard procedure. That way I'm less prone to mix something up. :-p

There is no hard limit, but if you make it too large it will overflow the preview area and scroll. The idea is to have a small image to give an idea of what to expect with the whole theme.

I found that you could put the script on your own server so thats what I did. Everything is work like clock work now. Couldn't get it to work again with Go Trillian though......

I too am having problems with the status indicators - I set them up yesterday just fine; today they are all constantly offline. I've checked cache, the password etc, I have full access through the firm's firewall (I run it!) and I just can't understand what's changed to make it stop working.

Unfortunately, I can't create my own service either. :((

I noticed my trillian status was showing offline despite the fact that I was indeed online so I checked on the webstatus connections in trillian...there were none. I tried to add one...webstatus wasn't in my list of connection types. I went to plugins and webstatus still shows up as a plugin...but when I tried to enable it, trillian tells me it's not a valid plugin.

Updates are not always immediate. There is a delay that considers you to be offline if your last 'online' report was more than so many minutes ago. Right now your images indicate that you are offline.

ok am I the only one experiencing the "This is not a valid Trillian Plugin" error? I have been experiencing this for a while...something got screwed up. I haven't had my trillian status bar working for a while now and it seems my last comment in this thread was ignored.

oh and before you suggestion I read your FAQ (http://www.gotrillian.com/forums/faq.php?), I have and it does not cover the specific issue I am experiencing.

edit: oh and I just redownloaded the webstatus plugin from here (http://www.sjoerdjob.com/plugins/webstatus/#obtain) again and verified the md5 and sha1 checksums as listed on the site. After doing that I still get the not a valid plugin error.

I've seen that error come up with users who are not using the correct version of Trillian Pro, or are using a version of Trillian Basic that has been hacked into Trillian Pro. Do you have a current and valid copy of Trillian Pro? ::shrugs::

The WebStatus plugin is only available for Trillian Pro versions 3.x and above.

I have a perfectly valid copy of Trillain Pro 3.1 and I've downloaded and verified the dll for webstatus several times...still tells me it isn't a valid Trillian Plugin...

this is like the third time I've posted trying to get help with this...guess I'm the only one with this problem...

When you go to set up your images, you first select which theme you want. When you select an option from the select box, a preview of that theme will appear to the right.

Is there anyway for the artist who did the original status indicators to actually put up a Google-Talk one to have the option of replacing the Jabber one? (E.g., "G-Talk" as text) I'm betting that Google Talk will take off big time within the year and since they've begun offering Gmail accounts now to anyone with a cellphone, that smells to me like they will move out of BETA and go bigtime. (clock) And the clock is only ticking before this happens.

I've downloaded Google Talk and it looks and feels like a good juicy steak and I'd love to see Trillian be on top of this when it takes off. I know Dotcomguy has said in an earlier post that Jabber and G-Talk is recognized as the same by Trillian, but the poster made a good point (even though he has two simultaneous accounts=Jabber+Google which cannot be differentiated by Trillian). Jabber will fall by the wayside (isn't it already??) when Google Talk hits, and then you'll have a zillion+ people coming to Trillian and looking for this exact option that I'm trying to bring to fruition. (cash)

I may be far off here, but It seems to me that it would be a piece of cake to just have the image put up (hint: dotcomguy) so that users like myself can be the hippest thing around - not to mention cutting edge for Cerulean Studios - to be on top of sh*t when it goes live across the globe.

Basically, all you'd have to do is have a Status Indicator button that says "G-Talk" and when the users build their HTML for 'online status', we can just choose G-Talk instead of Jabber as a button - given the fact that Trillian treats them the same. Nifty. Perfect. And cutting edge for Trillian to do, not to mention easy. And not to offend anyone, but who uses Jabber anymore anyways? AIM, Yahoo, ICQ and MSN are the big 4 players in this game, and (hint: dotcomguy) we all know that when G-Talk gets into the game that'll be the "Big 5" players. Trillian= (cash)

It's not a lot to ask, and easy-as-sh*t to set up on GoTrillian's side. And that way you'll all be smokin' and ahead of the game when the game get's going.

Even Tony at onlinestatus.org doesn't have one yet and in anticipation of Google moving out of BETA, most of us around do not have Jabber accounts (referencing your current polls with only 2 votes) and never will. And yes, I noticed that Google-Talk (i.e., G-Talk hint: dotcomguy) doesn't have *any* votes either, but I think that experienced Internet webmasters know that that will change big time. Just think of the rush to get Gmail accounts and look at the sah-weet GUI that G-Talk has right now and you know that they mean business.

C'mon dotcomguy - this is an easy call. You can pull it off - at least for the mediumblue, or default status indicator PNGs.

(I'll bet'cha a $100 bucks I'm right down the road - they aren't going to stop G-Talk - it'll only grow into a monster. A Big monster...)

Right now Trillian makes no distinction between a Google Talk account and a regular Jabber account since they are the same thing. And, actually if you use Google Talk, you are in fact using Jabber because that is the protocol which Google is using (and wisely in my opinion).

There are things that can be done in terms of the images that would be more conducive to this goal than programmatic changes. For instance, one could create a webstatus theme which included a jabber image that implied Google Talk rather than standard Jabber. Under the hood it would still be Jabber, but the user would see a gtalk image.

I'm a coder, so naturally I suck at graphics. :-p But as always submissions are welcome, and I can put them up rather easily. :-)

Changes to your status may not be reflected immediately by the images. Give it a few minutes. Regarding mouseover effects, that would be done using Javascript most likely or perhaps CSS.

So... I'm guessing there are problems again? I've followed everything to a "T" (latest "Pro" Trillian, copied DLL, Initialized plugin, created connection - says connected, forwarded/openend ports on router, etc, etc, etc.), on the instructions for making this thing work, and it still shows me offline, even though I'm on.

Is there still a solution to host the service on our own web servers? I have full access to the machines, but then again, maybe that would be contrary to GoTrillian's plans.

Any thoughts on why I'm "offline" instead of "online"? From everyone's comments, this sounds great, and I've seen it done with other apps, but so far I'm not impressed. :-\
