Google is now entering the world of Instant Messaging in an effort to bring together all the ways you interact on-line from instant messaging to e-mail to voice chat.

So what does this mean for Trillian?

Cerulean Studios, since the launch of Trillian Pro in 2002, had long decided that the Jabber protocol will be one of the most important plugins available for their users. And as if the folks over at Google were to prove Trillian's vision of interoperability and commitment to the open standards of Jabber XMPP, they have decided to use the open source Jabber protocol to power its instant messaging service.

As a result, Trillian Pro is now compatible with Google Talk since day one! Trillian Pro users need only the jabber plugin (http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/downloads/detail.php?item=279) and a gmail (http://www.gmail.com) or Google account to connect!

Powered by the versatile interface of Trillian Pro, users of Google Talk can now enjoy features that are not available using Google's client, such as File Transfer, Activity History (a.k.a. Message History or Log), skins of complex or minimal interfaces, and advanced user management features. Moreover, you can stay connected and organized with your friends on AIM, ICQ, MSN or Yahoo in one single client with a small combined memory footprint.

This is great news for IM interoperability which is a core principle of Trillian, that people be able to communicate freely without being hindred by proprietary protocols. Trillian users who already have a Jabber account (http://www.gotrillian.com/perl/jabber) will not need to sign up for a new account or download a new program in order to chat with Google Talk users (See note below*).

By using a protocol with which Trillian is compatibile this could also promote Trillian usage. If Google Talk becomes popular, many people may want to use a client that allows them to chat with their buddies on Google Talk as well as buddies on AIM, MSN, etc. Trillian is the obvious answer! Google is also very open to users using third-party clients to connect which is admirable.

Here is a short guide for those who are interested to use Trillian Pro for Google Talk medium:

For new users, please go download Trillian (http://www.gotrillian.com/perl/download) from the official web site to get a free evaluation of Trillian Pro.

For Trillian Basic users, you can evaluate Trillian Pro by going to your Contact List -> Trillian menu on the top -> and click "Request for an evaluation version".

For Trillian Pro users, kick start right away with Google Talk's guide to Trillian Pro (http://www.google.com/support/talk/bin/answer.py?answer=24077)!

If there is a problem in the connection, feel free to post in the official Trillian forums. In the mean time, Sparks, the author of the Jabber plugin, is making some fixes to ensure compatibility with GTalk.

I downloaded the client and like its minimalistic style...and i also like how when someone msg's me and their window is minimized, a notification pops up and displays what they typed...i dbout Trillian will be able to do that :(...not sure. Anyway, its not bad at all...i may just turn Jabber on and use it that way...

I love it! However, I haven't successfully connected to it via Jabber on Trillian yet. :-\ I get connected lost or something.

As far as I know this is not true. The Google Jabber server doesn't allow server-to-server connections which means that users of other Jabber servers can't get in touch with Google Talk users.

You're right; Google Talk does not support server to server connections at this time. I forgot to update the announcement but just added a note about it.

Edit: According to the Google Talk FAQ (http://www.google.com/talk/about.html#open) we can look forward to s2s in the future.

Google is conquering the web, one service at a time.

Honestly, I can't wait to try it out more. I don't know anyone that uses jabber currently.
